Ground Prana and the Basic Chakra

The winter months have finally passed and spring is upon us. Winter can be a difficult season from an energetic perspective. We are limited in our access to fresh air, ground, and solar prana as the days are shorter, darker, and temperatures and weather have us spending more time indoors. Spring is a marked change and a great opportunity to enjoy the outdoors and the energetic benefits it provides.

One of my favorite activities to do once the weather permits, is to hike in the woods. The serenity and beauty of nature is not only healthy for our mental state, giving us a chance to de-stress and relax, the environment itself surrounds us with rich sources of energy. Being outside in the sun fills us with solar prana and the fresh air filtered by the trees provides high quality air prana. Walking directly on the earth, instead of on concrete or the floors of buildings, gives us an abundance of ground prana. It is this access to ground prana that we often overlook. The importance of clean air and sunlight to many aspects of our health is well established and reiterated, but less discussed, is the need for ground prana that provides fuel for our basic chakra. The basic chakra is located at the base of our tailbone and is essential for our survival, material prosperity, and physical health. It governs our survival instincts and by extension our ambitions and follow through. It also affects much of our physical strength and vitality. Our blood cells, bones, and muscles are fed by the basic chakra. Much of the prana this chakra utilizes comes straight from the earth by way of the minor chakras in our feet. When you consider the size of the planet and the forces at play beneath its surface, it is easy to understand the power and abundance of this energy source. When our basic chakra is properly nourished with prana from the earth, our bodies are strong, as is our drive and will to succeed.

This March, I hope you take the time to enjoy your favorite outdoor activity, one you’ve probably been missing all winter. Whether you enjoy hiking, jogging, or walking your pets, reconnecting with Mother Earth is essential. This time spent outdoors will reward you with not only recreation and exercise, but an energy boost as well!
